Mercy's Garage Shirts.

After posting the cover art for Iron Kissed, Winterwolf asked me when I was going to make a T-shirt like that available to him. He may have been joking at the time, but it got me to thinking. After all, how hard can it be to get some custom T-shirts? I wrote to the cover artist, Daniel Dos Santos, and asked about using the "Mercy's Garage" logo he'd created for the cover. He very generously agreed to let us use it, so I called a graphics shop and started the ball rolling.

I had no idea that there were so many different technologies used to transfer an image to a piece of cloth. After some discussion, I decided to go with a traditional silk-screen technique. Subtle gradients aren't handled well, but the primary colors are bold, solid and won't wash out. The problem is that, as you add colors to the image, the number of screens required increases, as does the number of steps needed to reproduce the image on each shirt. After some work the "Mercy's Garage" logo was rendered in six colors.

Tee Shirt

The T-shirt is a 100% cotton Haynes Beefy-T with red trim. Classic, cool and inexpensive.

The baseball shirt is a medium-weight 100% cotton shirt by Sport-Tek, with three-quarter length sleeves. It looks great, and is a little "dressier" than a regular Tee shirt.

Polo Shirt

These were the closest shirts we could find to what Mercy was depicted as wearing in the cover. A polo is an unusual choice for silk-screen images because the pique knit makes it hard to transfer details. We initially only built a few of these, because the print shop had some doubts about how well they'd work. I was pleasantly surprised by the results -- the details are very slightly "pixilated" by the shirt's finish, but they look great. We've placed a larger order, and are now well-stocked with Polos! These are classy looking shirts, and a very nice price for a high quality polo shirt.

Hoodie

This is a medium-weight (8.5 oz) Haynes zipper-front hoodie in grey. It's soft, warm and just perfect for nippy mornings or layering under heavier winter wear. The photo doesn't do it justice, but the very smooth fabric makes for a great image transfer, including that tricky yellow to orange gradient in the flames!
